Profile

Prof (Dr) Kapa Sarjan Rao is a graduate in Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, Post graduate and Doctorate in Feed and Fodder Technology (Animal Nutrition) from Acharya N G Ranga Agricultural University, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad. Since, last 28 years he has served in the teaching, research and extension activities at Department of Animal Husbandry, Agriculture and Veterinary Universities in the state of Andhra Pradesh. He has also served as Dean, College of Veterinary Science, Proddatur and currently he is working as Dean of Student Affairs, Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University, Tirupati.

He has guided 40 students in the Master’s and Doctoral program, and authored more than 100 research publications, which includes 5 textbooks by international publishers. His extensive research on fodder has aided in establishment of fodder banks with 21 proven perennial fodder varieties which can sustain to low input areas. He has developed a novel Body Condition Score System for Crossbred Cows, Murrah, graded Murrah and Deccani Ewes. New Body Condition Score system developed first of its kind in the world which can be used independently as a tool for precision animal feeding. He has developed feeding systems based on Sunflower Crop residues, Groundnut Haulms for dairy cattle and Azolla and Sheanut cake for buffalo calves and Nellore sheep. He has worked and is working on the Hydroponic fodder cultivation using Fodder Maize and Barley seed both in commercial lines and household models for the dairy animals and sheep feeding. The major projects carried out including, “Assessment of Nutritive Values by the calibrations developed using the Portable Near Infra Red Spectroscopy (NIRS)” under Arche Net work Project has explored the Sorghum based complete diets, “Establishment of Jersey x Sahiwal crossbred bull mother farm” funded by RKVY with an outlay of 1.5 crore has helped to study the adaptability, productive and reproductive performance of Jersey x Sahiwal crossbred cows in hot and humid climatic and feeding conditions.

He was the recipient of Acharya NG Ranga Agricultural University and Andhra Pradesh State Best Teacher Awards.. He was the Chairman, Strategy Development for the Integration of IT in Domain areas of Livestock Nutrition, Production and Health by Information Technology Research Academy (ITRA), Ministry of Electronics and Communications, New Delhi and developed the strategies for the integration of IT in the domain areas of Agriculture and allied education sectors. He is also actively involved in the National Innovative Foundation (NIF), Ahmadabad, and Gujarat for mapping of innovative technologies in Animal Research. He has visited the university of Agricultural Sciences, Botswana as a guest speaker and suggested the strategies on Dairy Development to the Government. He presented many theme papers in International conferences, 2nd Ani Nue Conference of Animal Nutrition, Khon Kaen University, Thailand, 2nd World Conference, Nanjing, China, Accelerating the end of Hunger and Malnutrition by International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), Bangkok, 11th Asian and 12th World Buffalo Congress. He was the Organizing Secretary one National seminar, one International conference, INDIGENOUS and four National workshops. He is the member of D-groups of FAO, selection committee member for various senior positions of universities, scientists of ICAR institutions.
