About

The Department of Livestock Products Technology, NTR College of Veterinary Science was initiated in the year 2000-2001 to specifically deal with the production and processing technology of milk, meat, eggs, and wool. The department is situated earlier in the east while building of Bacon Factory, Gannavaram. Later on, with an outlay of 43.5 lakhs, the department was renovated in the year 2014-15 and shifted to the present building in 2016. At the time of inception, the department was mainly engaged in undergraduate teaching programme formulated by VCI. It started postgraduate programme during the year 2010-2011 and so far 7 students have successfully completed their Master’s Degree in the Dept of LPT. Later on, in the academic year 2015-2016 the Ph.D. programme was also started with an initial intake of 2 scholars.

During these past years, concerted efforts and programmatic approach of staff of this department has resulted in the development of the department. A well-developed semi-automatic slaughter house for slaughter of pigs is available for hygienic slaughter and sale of meat. Sale of fresh and frozen pork is being carried out regularly. Facilities are available for hands – on training of students in processing, packaging and product development. Infrastructure such as semi automatic line dressing railing system is available for carrying out humane slaughter of animals and for research work. Basic meat and milk processing equipment like Meat Mincer, Sausage stuffer, Bowl chopper, Slicer, Brisket cutting saw, Smoking Chamber, Brine curing tanks, Cure injection equipment, Cooking vats, Cold store equipment, Ice cream freezer, Cream separator, Gerbers milk testing centrifuge are available. Semi automatic poultry processing line with automatic defeatherer, bleeding tanks singeing machine and cut-up-parts making machine is available in the department. Vacuum packaging equipment with MAP facility, Food Processor, Kjeltech Apparatus , pH meter ,High speed centrifuge, Electric hot plates, Deep Freezers, Inoculation hood with UV lamp, Electronic Balance, Ocular Micrometer , Orbital Shakers,Metallic Stirrerers, Incubators, Hot Air Oven, Distilled Water Apparatus Nano Dropper, Flame Photometer ,Moisture balance, Rotary evaporator etc. along with all other necessary food processing equipment are available in the department.
