Buffalo Research Station was established at Venkataramannagudem, West Godavari District

Buffalo Research Station was established at Venkataramannagudem, West Godavari District vide University Board Resolution No. 6197 during the year 1999 to take care of the research work to establish an elite herd of Murrah Buffaloes and to supply the elite Murrah germplasm to the needy farmers for breed improvement in that region.

Initially, a network project on Buffalo Improvement was started during the year 2001 and continued for 11 years. Later in addition to this genetic improvement of Godavari (Murrah) buffaloes was undertaken with reference to physiology and behavioral aspects and nutrition and feeding regimen.

Through project on superior germplasm and genetic improvement in buffaloes using open nucleus breeding system in collaboration with progressive buffalo farmers under RKVY project superior buffaloe germplasm, fodder slips were distributed to farmers and several training programmes were organized to enlighten the farmers on different managemental aspects.

  • During 1999-2000 under evaluation of locally available feeds and fodders, improve quality and formulation of complete economic rations in sugarcane-based production system cost of feeding was reduced.
  • Qualitative and quantitative evaluation of various varieties of Bracharia and Panicum for livestock feeding in order to enable the scientists to give better guidance to farmers on fodder cultivation
  • Qualitative evaluation of johnsons grass for livestock feeding was undertaken and suggested the farmers replace this variety with superior varieties of fodder
  • During 2003 to 2004 under production of male buffalo calves for meat purpose under cultivated fodder based production system projects economic meat production from wasted 7 unwanted male buffalo calves were studied.
  • During 2008 to 2013 economic meat production from male buffalo calves and sheep under cultivated fodder based production system with Shea Nut Cake (Butyrospermum Parkii ) based concentrate mixture supplemented with Probiotics was undertaken.
