The Department of Animal Genetics and Breeding has been formed with the inception
of Andhra Veterinary College, during the year 1953. Reorganization of Departments
had taken place with the formation of A.P. Agricultural University and the department
was merged with Department of Poultry Science in 1964. Once again it was bifurcated
and the Department of Animal Genetics and Breeding was reborn in July 1978. The
department since then made a phenomenal progress in all the areas of teaching, research
and extension activities.
The department was upgraded on 14.06.2001 by the creation of Professor Post. The
department has a sanctioned strength of one Professor, one Associate Professor,
four Assistant Professors and two office subordinates. At present, the department
is headed by Dr. B. Punyakumari, Associate Professor and assisted by Dr. G. Bharathi,
Assistant Professor.
The Post Graduate programme was started in the year 1986-87 and so far 20 candidates
were awarded M.V.Sc degree (majoring in Animal Genetics and Breeding). The trends
of research in the department mainly centered around the Cytogenetic and Molecular
characterization of livestock breeds of Andhra Pradesh, evaluation of the productive
and reproductive performance of Ongole Cattle, Nellore Sheep, indigenous and crossbred
Pigs and assessment of the genetic status of livestock populations. Knowledge and
research findings of the department were being shared with the field veterinarians
and farmers. This department is offering consultancy services to officers of the
Animal Husbandry department and farmers. The staff of the department is also participating
in Rythu Chaitanya Yatras, Rythu Sadassu, Polam pilustondi programmes etc. The staff
of this department have presented papers at various National and International conferences
and attended several training programmes.
