Department of Veterinary Microbiology

About

The Department of Microbiology was established in the year 1955 and it is one of the earliest departments in which post-graduation was started as early as 1968. So far a total of 100 M.V.Sc and 11 Ph.D students graduated from this Department. The department is known to the scientific world of Microbiology and Immunology for its pioneering and outstanding contributions in:

The department has made great strides in the field of bacteriology:

  • Seroepidemiology of leptospirosis was studied.
  • Leptonema, new genome species was isolated and characterised.
  • Isolation, identification and molecular characterisation of Dermatophilosis.
  • Standardized methodologies for isolation and serogrouping of Dichelobacternodosus from field samples.
  • Standardized genotyping of Clostridium perfringens and reported the presence of ClostridiumperfringensType-C in sheep.

Virology:
  • Developed inactivated vaccine to EDS-76 virus
  • First report on PPR in Andhra Pradesh and studied Sero-epidemiology of PPR in INDIA
  • Isolation and characterization of IBR.
  • Epidemiology of bluetongue was studied and the circulation of multiple serotypes (2,9,21) was recorded in A.P.
  • Reported the confirmatory outbreak of sheep associate Malignant Catarrhal Fever (SA-MCF) in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh.
Technology Transfer:
  • Immuno diagnostics: Trained the Scientists of VBRI, Hyderabad on development of Diagnostic kit to monitor the ET vaccine responses in animals and transferred the technology for use.
  • Bluetongue vaccine for field use: Officers of the Department of Animal Husbandry were trained on Development of Bluetongue vaccine and transferred the Technology for field use.
